Creating concrete and measurable success

In a recent blog by Sir Alex Ferguson titled, If You Want to Be Successful, You Have to Know What Success Means, Sir Ferguson makes a very simple yet elegant point, that before we can achieve any real and measurable success we have to be frank and honest about setting realistic, achievable goals. It is not enough to say I want to be rich or I want to be the best. There is certainly nothing wrong with wanting success or wanting to be the best at what we do, but how are you going to get there, and how will you know, once you do?

In his career as Manager for one of the leading football franchises, the Manchester United, (and yes that’s Soccer for my countrymen), Sir Alex Ferguson presided over the Barclay’s Premier League franchise the Manchester United for more than twenty-five years. In that time he compiled an impressive record of 894 wins and 38 Trophies. For my friends on this side of the pond think Sir Stanley or Vince Lombardi. This is a man that knows more than a thing or two about setting goals and achieving those goals. And, how did he do it you may ask? “ By being careful about setting specific long-range, realistic and achievable targets.” In his own words he states, “There is a balance that needs to be weighed when conveying a sense of what’s possible with the reality of the circumstances. You have to set up each individual for success”. So instead of, I want to be rich, or I want to be the best, try breaking those goals down into achievable, measurable components like, I want to save X amount of dollars this year, or I want to contribute X amount of dollars to my 401k each year. Give yourself a realistic goal that you can actually know once you have achieved, and never be afraid to set the bar a little higher.

These goals need to be realistic, concrete, and achievable, but not so over the top that you set yourself up for disappointment. So what does that look like for you? Do you have specific goals that you can look at, at the end of every day, week, month and year that will help you stay on-track to achieve your long-term goals of being successful? And are you keeping yourself accountable to completing those goals every day?

At Trinity Allied Partners, we would love to work with you, and help you develop and achieve those goals. We have seasoned staffing professionals that want to be their best, and want to help our clients and our candidates be their best. To find out more, please visit our website at
